Thank you to all involved with the Black History and Culture celebration! The poetry, music, and people were inspiring. Let’s make it an annual tradition.
Joel reports that he’s having an amazing time on the WHS Spanish Exchange trip! If you support WABC, you have helped make this life-changing experience happen. Thank you to everyone who donates to Winchester ABC. #culturalimmersion
Do you love working with teens? Do you like making a difference in the lives of others? Winchester ABC is looking for a Study Hall Advisor to supervise study halls Monday through Thursday 7:30 to 9:30 PM at ABC House. You’ll get to work with amazing scholars and a team of dedicated volunteers. Please send a résumé if you are interested and we can send you the full job description. Jobs@winchesterabc.org
ABC admission visits have begun! We love meeting the candidates and their families and showing them the town, ABC House, and the high school. (Notice Max’s amazing NHD project on the killing of Vincent Chin, which is in the high school library.) The candidates come from near and far to see if Winchester ABC will be the right choice for them. Typically WABC gets 30-40 candidates for only one or two spots. Decisions come out the beginning of March. It’s exciting to make these early memories with boys who will go on to have four years in Winchester and be part of the WABC family.
As part of our WABC Career Speaker Series, the scholars met entertainment lawyer and producer Todd Shill, who video chatted into the living room after the scholars watched his film AUDIBLE on Netflix. Mr. Shill talked about working in a video store in high school in his hometown of Harrisburg, PA and dreaming about a career in movies. It was a circuitous route with lots of rejections along the way but he is now doing something he loves. He encouraged the scholars to never give up on their dreams.
Here are a few photos from the weekend— Jayden’s basketball game, a great meal out with the RAC and Weekend Mentor, and snow shoveling after the big storm with the Resident Directors. This week is midyear exams so please wish the scholars luck! 💪🏼 🍀
These are dark times but the fight for freedom and justice continues. Today we remember the great words of Dr. King and the need to cultivate “dangerous unselfishness.” Collective action will lead us to a brighter future.
Black history comes alive through creativity — art, music, words and more. We love this contest sponsored by the WHS Black Student Union and can’t wait to see the innovative work that students make.
What a festive and happy Holiday Open House! The scholars love their new sweatshirts from the ABC elves. Thank you to so many friends for stopping by. Please remember to donate and support WABC this year— winchesterabc.org
Today you can make a difference in the lives of the Winchester ABC scholars. Please consider a donation to support this amazing 52-year-old program that has 100-plus graduates. WABC counts on individual donations to support the needs of the scholars as they attend four years of Winchester High School. Costs have gone up for house utilities, house maintenance, SAT prep and summer programs, not to mention all the food that growing teenage boys need! You can donate online, through the mail, with a corporate match and through programs like Amazon Smile. Give the gift of education today. Thank you!
